As a first time buyer, you have the choice of getting a “Pay-as-you-go” plan, where you buy a phone and a “bucket” of minutes. Let’s jus say that you basically pay for just the minutes you use and nothing else.
Minutes are typically $0.10 and with Cingular, there are basically two different Pay-as-you-Go plans – one where you get free mobile-to-mobile calls and rollover for $29.99 for 200 minutes (lowest plan) with no commitment (up to $69.99 for 600 minutes with unlimited nights and weekends and mobile-to-mobile. All of these plans have rollover minutes.
There is also another one where you just pay $1.00 a day for any day you use the phone and then $0.10 a minute for every minute you use. These are good types of plans for people who only need their phone for emergencies or the occasional call.
Verizon has EasyPay which is $50.00 a month for 300 minutes (lowest plan), and also does not have a commitment and does have unlimited nights and weekends. The EasyPay minutes can only be used in the EasyPay area and you pay roaming charges for any areas that are not part of the EasyPay territory. InPulse is the pay-as-you-go plan from Verizon and is $0.10 a minute, $0.99 a day for any day you
use the phone.
Basically, both carriers have a similar plan and both have a special plan for pay-as-you-go. Phones for Verizon for these plans range from $69.99 to $119.99 and there are three available. Cingular has several models to choose from ranging from $29.99. All of the models of phones from both carriers will be easy to use and there are “non-fancy” models available that should be very good for a brand new user.
The other type of service is the monthly type, where you buy or get a phone for no charge with a two-year commitment. The lowest Cingular and Verizon plan is $39.99 for 450 minutes, 5,000 minutes for nights and weekends and free mobile-to-mobile calls. Nights with Verizon start at 9:01pm and go to 5:59am the next time.
Cingular’s nights are 9:00pm to 7:00am the next day. Weekends with Verizon are 12:00am Saturday to 11:59pm Sunday. Cingular’s are Friday at 9:00pm to Monday at 7:00am. Cingular has rollover minutes (if you don’t use your minutes, they roll over to the next month and add to your minute bucket), Verizon does not have a rollover plan.
If most of your family and friends have Verizon, you probably won’t benefit from the free mobile-to-mobile with them if you choose Cingular, but you would with your work peers if they take advantage of the Cingular discount and have Cingular service. The employee discount is only available on the monthly plans and is not available for the pay-as-you-go plans.
If you decide on Cingular, you can contact Cingular directly; they can give you the name of the person responsible for your company’s account, who can help you with the Premier web site. You will get special on-line discounts with both companies, if you decide to purchase on-line.
As far as coverage goes, both Verizon and Cingular have coverage, but it appears that the Cingular coverage is better (this is not an original Verizon territory, so they may not have built up the area as well as Cingular, perhaps). Verizon definitely has decent coverage (as I’m sure your friends will attest to, so don’t rule out Verizon based on coverage).
Verizon has a 15 day trial period and Cingular has a 30 day trial period. If you decide after the trial period that you don’t like or want the phone and/or service, you are not on the hook for the 2 year commitment. This is not available with the pay-as-you-go plans.

On March 1st, 2007, Verizon Wireless officially launched their mobile TV service, which has been branded Vcast Mobile TV. For now, the service will be available in 20 markets.
The service is already available from Verizon, and users can visit Verizon’s site or call *611 from their handsets to subscribe. Verizon is offering the service for $15.
For users that have already been using Verizon’s Vcast service, there is a package where users can keep all their current service options, and get Vcast mobile TV for $25 total each month.
Vcast currently allows Verizon customers to download music, video clips, wallpapers, screen savers, games, and more. The videos that users have been able to download include: sports highlights, comedy, television shows, and more.
However, none of the shows were live television; surely Vcast users everywhere will be upgrading.
Verizon has announced that Vcast Mobile TV will have eight live channels including: CBS, Comedy Central, Fox, MTV, NBC News, NBC Entertainment, and Nickelodeon. Even though the lineup is quite modest at this point in time, Verizon will be able to get the bugs out of the system. Verizon says that they plan to expand the lineup soon.
Verizon is using Qualcomm’s MediaFlo technology for the service. The technology allows for streaming video to inexpensively reach the hands of wireless users. It appears at this time that AT&T will also use MediaFlo when they release their mobile television service later this year.
AT&T and T-Mobile have both announced that they will be offering some kind of mobile television service sometime this year. Sprint Nextel has yet to comment on the addition of the service. Sprint Nextel does offer, however, a service that allows users to download video clips, so it shouldn’t be a stretch for them to implement.
At this point in time, there is only one model that Verizon offers with the service. The Samsung SCH-a620 offers streaming video and unprecedented full Vcast functionality.
You can pick up the model on Verizon’s site for $150, after all of the available discounts. This price is for new customers and customers who are available for upgrades. All users will have to sign or resign a new 2-year contract to get this price.
Verizon has a second television phone on the way, the LG vx9400. The model should be released later this month. The vx9400 has a swivel screen that allows users to watch television from two different angles. The screen size of the vx9400 is much larger than the SCH-a620, which could be why Verizon is releasing the phone a few weeks after.
Here are the markets where the service is available: Chicago, Ill.; Denver and Colorado Springs, Col.; New Orleans, La.; Dallas-Ft. Worth, Texas; Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.; Seattle-Tacoma and Spokane, Wash.; Tucson, Ariz.; Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M.; Omaha-Lincoln, Neb.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Norfolk-Richmond, Va.; Salt Lake City, Utah; Palm Springs, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; Wichita, Kan.; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo.
The service is already getting positive reviews from quite a few blogs and sites. It will definitely be a positive when the service reaches all markets.
Verizon FiOS: Excellent Support Means No More Waiting for the Cable Guy
If you currently have cable Internet and/or television, ask yourself how happy you are with the reliability, and with the customer service you get when you call for help. Most cable customers would happily choose another provider, if someone else offered the same speed, quality and content options at a comparable price. Verizon Fios goes one better.
Cable Internet providers brag about their high speeds and fiber-optic networks, but there’s one fact they’re leaving out. The fiber-optic networks cable providers use stop at your curb. Your Internet access enters and leaves your home over conventional analog connections, because cable fiber-optic networks do not extend into your home. Verizon FiOS is the first Internet service to extend fiber-optic connection all the way to your computer. This means FiOS is far faster than cable.
Verizon FiOS is also more reliable than cable Internet, again because the signal travels over digital fiber-optic networks exclusively. You won’t find a more stable Internet service provider than Verizon’s new FiOS service. It’s simply the best in terms of uptime and reliability.
You’ll also find the quality of your connection is much better with Verizon FiOS; you won’t have the equivalent of a brownout when your connection seems to falter, as it often does with cable and DSL. With Verizon FiOS, you get the always-on connection you pay for.
And if you currently have cable, you’ll appreciate that Verizon FiOS comes with better, more courteous and more helpful customer service technicians than you may get with your current provider. While you should find yourself needing customer support far less often with Verizon FiOS, when you do need it, you’ll have a pleasant experience and get your problem solved quickly.
When you sign up with Verizon FiOS, you’ll get access to a library of great content, including games, gaming reviews and news, movie trailers and reviews and exclusive interviews, and music reviews and features mixes exclusive to Verizon users.
As you can see, Verizon FiOS does not offer the “same speed, quality and content options” as cable; it offers much faster connections, with better quality and excellent content. You’ll also be surprised to find it does not cost about the same as cable, but actually costs less, with plans starting at $42.99 monthly.
If you’re currently using cable Internet, ask yourself how happy you are with the service. If your answer falls short of “extremely thrilled”, isn’t it time to go with better, faster, and cheaper? When you sign up with Verizon FiOS for one year, you’ll get a free professional installation, connect to the Internet at blazingly fast speeds, pay less per month than you’re currently spending on cable, and get the excellent quality and professional support you expect from an Internet service provider.
Verizon FiOS offers an alternative to the cable company-an alternative that most people will agree is far superior to the service offered by cable or DSL. Your Internet service is an important part of your life, and you expect and deserve the best.

Have you ever thought about switching to VOIP phone service from regular phone service? There are a lot of benefits that come with using a high quality digital VOIP service. Verizon FiOS, the first fiber optic digital VOIP service is one of the best VOIP phone services on the market because of the unique fiber optic cable network that Verizon is creating. If you’re thinking about trying Verizon FIOS phone service but you haven’t made the jump to trying it yet here are five reasons why you should give Verizon FiOS phone service a try:
1. Better Clarity
One of the biggest reasons that people avoid trying VOIP phone systems is the quality of the calls. People don’t want to switch to a VOIP phone service if their calls will sound bad. And some VOIP phone services don’t have a very strong network which causes a lot of dropped calls and a lot of poor quality connections. But Verizon FiOS phone service is 100% digital and all the calls go through fiber optic cables that act like firehoses pumping information. Verizon FiOS can handle a lot more data, meaning that all the calls you make will be extremely clear.
2. Less Interruption
VOIP phone services like the Verizon FiOS phone service depend on an Internet connection to make calls. And sometimes, your Internet connection can be slow or the Internet Service Provider can’t handle a lot of user traffic which results in your calls getting dropped or noise interruptions while on the call. Verizon FiOS’ powerful Internet connection means that you don’t have to worry about service interruptions or dropped calls.
3. Better Price
Most of the Verizon FiOS phone service plans are flat rate. For one low price you can make all the local calls and long distance calls that you want. If you want to add on international calls to your plan, there are many packages you can choose from to get a flat rate or discounted rate. If you want just the basic minimum of phone service you can switch to a low rate per minute plan. Regardless of which plan you choose you will be surprised at how much money switching to a VOIP phone service like Verizon’s can save you.
4. Included Features
With traditional phone service you end up paying extra for things like call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and other features that many people want to have. When you switch to a VOIP phone service like Verizon FiOS, most if not all of the features that you really want to have are included in your monthly flat rate. You won’t get nickel and dimed with a VOIP phone service.
5. Better International Call Rates
If you do need to make international calls that are not covered in your flat rate plan, you’ll find that Verizon FiOS international calling rates to many countries are below the cost of traditional phone companies. Plus you won’t have to pay an additional long distance fee or any of the other extra fees that traditional phone companies tack onto international calls.

Verizon FiOS Digital Voice is telephone service that businesses and residential homes need, and it’s available right now for business owners and consumers.
There are a lot of advantages for businesses that use Verizon FiOS. If you have a small home business you probably don’t want to go through the trouble of installing another landline just for your business, but you need to be able to talk to customers and clients on the phone. You can get Verizon FiOS Digital Voice so that you can have a dedicated business phone line that you can use as much as you want, with no extra charge for long distance, and you can simply turn the phone off at the end of the day or use a soft phone that loads on your computer and can be turned off at night so that you won’t be disturbed after you’re done working for the day.
One low monthly rate includes voice mail, call waiting, caller ID and other services that you need to run your business effectively. You can also pay extra for features like voicemail by email and other services that Verizon FiOS Digital Voice offers to help keep your business running efficiently.
Verizon FiOS Digital Voice is great for medium size and larger businesses too. If you are using digital voice technology you can add lines whenever you need to add a new employee with minimal cost and aggravation. You won’t need to have a technician come out and mess around with your multi-line phone system or incur extra expenses by adding new landlines at your current office.
Adding a new line with the Verizon FiOS Digital Voice service is as easy as making a phone call and instantly the line will be active and accessible through your existing Verizon FiOS Internet service. If you need to cut off a line because the employee assigned to that line no longer works for you again, all you need to do is call and cancel that line. It doesn’t get easier than that.
Verizon FiOS Digital Voice is the perfect choice for any business owner or residence, whether it’s personal, a small business or a large business, and works great with anyone who wants to cut costs and make their home, office or offices run more efficiently.

There are lots of different factors that make Verizon FiOS a great deal, but one of the factors that people usually overlook is the specialized channels that are available through Verizon FiOS. Compared to the cost of the specialized channels on cable or satellite, Verizon FiOS charges a lot less for specialized channels like HD channels, premium movie channels, international channels, and some educational channels.
Verizon FiOS also offers an extensive library of content on their in house specialized channel, On Demand. Here are three of the best reasons that you should use Verizon FiOS specialty channels:
1. Get The Most Out Of Your TV – Did you pay a lot of money for a high quality HD flat screen or plasma TV with great audio? If you did and you’re using regular cable or satellite, you wasted a lot of money. No other digital TV service offers more channels than Verizon FiOS, and many of them are included in the basic package.
Cable companies and satellite companies that do offer specialty channels in HD often stick those channels in the most expensive package so that you have to pay a premium price and usually have to pay for channels you don’t need or want just to get the HD channels that you do want. If you want to really get the best picture and sound on your fancy TV, you need to get Verizon FiOS TV service so that you can get more HD channels, like the National Geographic HD channel, for less.
The specialty On Demand channel also gives you access to hundreds of HD TV shows and movies, many of them free. You’ve already spent the money to get a TV and stereo system that will give you a phenomenal TV experience. So now switch to Verizon FiOS so that you can get all the channels you want in HD.
2. Get The Ultimate Selection – Verizon FiOS’s On Demand channel isn’t like any other TV service’s view on demand system. Most cable companies overcharge for pay per view movies and don’t offer many HD choices. Satellite companies don’t usually offer a very wide selection of watch on demand movies and offer very little other content unless you subscribe to a premium package. But with Verizon FiOS, even with the basic package you can access the On Demand channel that has thousands of movies, many of them free. There are also popular TV shows and interactive content that you can watch whenever you want.
3. Improve Your LifeStyle – There are lots of shows and videos on the Verizon FiOS specialty channels that can help you improve your life, for free or for a very low cost. You can learn to cook and learn about nutrition with the help of famous TV chefs.
Or, you can watch a home workout program and get in a yoga, aerobics or even a walking workout at home for free with Verizon FiOS On Demand so there’s no need to join a gym. The hottest workouts are often features like yoga, running, boot camps, and other trendy workouts. Instead of paying for an expensive class you can get in shape at home for free with Verizon FiOS’s specialty channels. Or, you can choose educational kids content so that you can help your kids learn more and supplement what they are learning in school.

Verizon Wireless announced that it will provide customers the option to use, on its nationwide wireless network, wireless devices, software and applications not offered by the company. Verizon plans to have this new option rolled out nationwide by the end of 2008. Any device that meets the minimum technical standard will be activated on the network.
This is a huge shift for the wireless industry known for protecting their networks and the apps and devices that work on them. Just a few weeks ago sources reported Verizon’s opposition to Google’s push for open access on the nascent 700 MHz spectrum re-allocation. Verizon even sued (and withdrew) the FCC who is imposing so-called open-access rules for parts of the spectrum.
So why the sudden turnabout? According to Verizon, there is no change.
In a July 19th statement Verizon reiterated its position on the auction: we oppose the rules not the idea. An email from company spokesman, Jim Gerace, confirms this is still the company’s position. “We still oppose the FCC rules for 700 MHz” says his email, “we said back in July that we supported the idea of open access, but again did not think that the FCC needed to dictate it.”
Fair enough. Anyone who has ever dealt with the FCC can agree they can be a little overreaching at times. Consumers definitely don’t want any branch of the government to dictate choice.
However, we don’t want Network Operators to control our choices either. Until this announcement Verizon’s business plan was to do just that: control devices and apps on its network. “Spectrum is a shared resource that needs to be managed efficiently in order to support the needs of all users” says a recent press release. In other words Verizon is saying “we limit and control what is on our network because it is in the best interest of the public who, by the way, really owns the spectrum”.
Since the first cellular network was built operators have fiercely protected their network so they could ensure no degradation in service and customer satisfaction. They, after all, are the protector of the wireless user.
So what recent discovery was made that suddenly enables Verizon to open its network to everyone?
None…no new technical discovery, they could have given open access years ago. Recent developments, however, have helped top brass to “discover” their vulnerability in staying with an antiquated operating model.
Here’s what I think.
The bold move was a necessary preemptive strike. Verizon is not afraid of opening its network; the capability to technically protect and ensure the service quality of the network exists. They don’t care about the devices; any carrier would gladly give up the need to manage a huge supply chain for little to no bottom line gain.
Verizon’s concern is what a competing open network would do to its business. Google, who plans to bid in the upcoming 700 MHz auction, could pose a threat if they somehow got their hands on nationwide licenses. Add to that the announcement of the Open Handset Alliance (which includes Verizon competitors T-Mobile and Sprint/Nextel) Android developer platform a few weeks ago. Mix in the fact that Google and the 32 companies in the OHA have billions in cash and you have a few very nervous Cellular Network Operators.
It could have been termed a brilliant move if it was done 6 months ago. Now, however, it just looks like a forced strategic decision. In any event, long term this will prove to be good for consumers and ultimately good for Verizon.
Some call it a ploy, some feel its simply a move to dissuade Google from bidding on the 700 MHz spectrum, still others have applauded the move. It could be all three, but as Lowell McAdam, Verizon Wireless president and chief executive officer says “This is a transformation point in the 20-year history of mass market wireless devices”.

Verizon FiOS
What is Verizon FiOS High Speed Internet?
You have probably heard the buzz surrounding the latest offering from Verizon, Verizon FiOS. Verizon FiOS is a fully updated network of digital TV, digital phone and digital broadband Internet service. In some areas of the country only the Verizon FiOS Internet service is available because of the laws and licenses in different parts of the country.
How is Verizon FiOS different from digital cable Internet service or regular broadband Internet? The biggest difference is in the speed. Normal satellite and cable Internet services offer a speed of about 8 mega bytes per second at the top tier of their service. Verizon FiOS Internet service starts at 5 mega bytes per second and then climbs to 15 mega bytes per second and 30 mega bytes per second depending on which package you choose. Even though the Verizon FiOS Internet service is significantly faster than any other type of satellite or even cable Internet service the prices for the Verizon service are competitive with other high speed Internet services. Depending on where you live Verizon FiOS service might even be cheaper than cable Internet, which is usually more expensive than satellite Internet service.
The increased speed of the Verizon FiOS Internet service is made possible by the fiber optic cables that Verizon uses. In the past Verizon used copper wires like many of the satellite and cable Internet providers still use today. But by switching to fiber optic cables Verizon was able to more than triple the top speed of Internet service. Not everyone needs to have an Internet speed of 15 or 30 mega bytes per second but there are many professionals and hobby enthusiasts that can do a lot more with that increased speed.
Anyone that works in the film, TV, or advertising industries needs a fast Internet connection in order to be able to watch and edit film, TV clips or commercials online and needs to be able to get the information they need at a moment’s notice. Millions of gamers around the world need an ultra fast Internet connection in order to get the most of their games, especially if they are playing MMORPGs where they could be competing for server space with millions of other users at the same time.
Does the average person or the average family really need ultra fast Internet service? Lots of people wonder if paying for such high speed Internet service is really worth it if they aren’t playing online games or downloading a lot of items. But I believe it really is worth the cost. Think of how much time you waste waiting for web pages to load if they have large graphics on them, or waiting for family photos, images and other web components that take awhile to load.
You can save a lot of time by switching to an ultra high speed Internet service like Verizon FiOS. If you have kids that need to do a lot of homework, or if you are taking online classes yourself, you’ll see that doing homework goes much faster and is a lot easier when you can access the educational materials that you or your kids need to complete schoolwork on a fiber optic Internet connection.
